Part film, part video game, "Virtual Boring." draws viewers into a video game environment in which buttons, levels, and goals are subsumed by the churning imagery and jerky rhythms of early cinema. Borrowing visual and sound cues from video games but eliminating the interactive element, this short follows three performers -- Anna Matijasic, Kate O'Halloran, and Lydia Adler Okrent -- as they vie for the attention of the player, a tiny teacup with its own unusual agenda.
Originally conceived as a video game, "Virtual Boring." eventually borrowed its identity not just from games but also from old films and became a looped video suitable for its setup at I-House. The performers were shot on green screen, and then I edited the short to mimic early film techniques. Backgrounds and text were added using a scanner and After Effects. David Kessler created a 3-D teacup and animated its movement throughout, and helped "Virtual Boring." gets its old-film look with video effects. I added sound effects and bits of non-branded video game music, resulting in a weird little world on video.
